VLC Photonics has been granted by the Spanish Institute of External Commerce (ICEX), under the program “Invest in Spain”, with the project: SINPHONIC, for the development of a generic fabrication line of photonic integrated circuits in silicon nitride technology.
Hosted at the same time with ECOC on Sunday 27th, a free silicon photonics training session will also be organized by ePIXfab, to provide insight into the field of silicon photonics, including the concepts, the technologies, the key actors, the major application domains and the approaches for fabless prototyping. You can register and check the program at the silicon photonics training site.
Iñigo Artundo from VLC Photonics will be participating on the training by providing a short introductory course on the complete development cycle of a silicon photonics prototype, and how to interface with a design house and the rest of the ecosystem.
The International OSA Network of Students (IONS) is a program where student chapters can organize meetings between other chapter spreading its technical and professional developments.
This year a group of Iberian chapters joined to organize an IONS 2015 held in Valencia, between 24th and 26th of September. This conference is opened for PhD students and master students studying all fields that covers optics and photonics, and its registration is free of charges.
VLC Photonics will be sponsoring the event, and also giving a company and lab visit to attendees.
The Photonic Integration Conference is a one-day executive meeting explaining why integrated photonics is vital to keep our world communicating and connected in the 21st century. Global experts are meetingon the 23rd September in Eindhoven to discuss about the latest trends in the generic integration platforms and foundry models, the integration of photonics with microelectronics at different levels, and the exploitation of new materials and fibres.
Our CEO Iñigo Artundo was interviewed in a lengthy piece for the occasion (“The Next Step in Integrated Optics”), and he will be giving a talk at 14:00 in the conference about ‘Interfacing with foundries from an external user point of view’. Make sure to register in time and attend this must-be event in the heart of Europe.
The European Photonic Integration Forum (EPIF) is an event that gathers all relevant players and people interested in photonic integrated technologies in Europe. It is the place to get updated on the latest developments, get acquired with the moving trends and network with most of the ecosystem.
Since the 5th EPIF, which was organized at ECOC 2013 in London, rapid progress has been made in the capabilities of generic and open access photonic platforms, including software, design, fabrication and packaging.
In this new 6th edition, a quick overview will be given of the present capabilities of both InP, silicon and dielectric waveguide platforms, followed by a lively debate on the most hot topics in the field now. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with all involved companies and also enjoy a lunch at the event.
VLC Photonics has been selected to become part of this year’s edition of the prestigious ICEX Next programme. This programme is ICEX Spain’s Export and Investment program for Spanish SMEs that wish to start or consolidate their international business. With this initiative the Spanish Government has made an effort to help SMEs to internationalized this project, and apparently is working; the companies that where part of the 2012 and 2013 editions increased their exportation by 50%.

The ECOC Exhibition, the largest European optical communications event, is a key meeting place for those within the fibre optic communication technology industry.
This year the event comes to Valencia, taking place at the Fiera Valencia 28-30 September 2015 and will once again provide an unrivalled opportunity for manufacturers, suppliers and service providers of optical communications products and services to come together to meet and network with top decision makers from across the industry.
VLC Photonics will be sponsoring the technical conference, and also exhibiting at booth number 423. Make sure to pass by and learn the latest development in the field of optical integrated circuits, or have a chat with our experts on the best way to cover your photonic integration needs.
The European project FP7-PARADIGM, where VLC Photonics has been a partner in the last years, has created a shift in the development and manufacturing of photonics integrated components based on Indium Phosphide (InP). This shift has resulted in cost effective and versatile design, manufacturing and packaging based on generic foundry processe. The project, with a strong cross European consortium consisting of leading industrial and academic players, has paved the way for the world’s first generic photonic foundry business and enable photonic ICs to become widely used in various application fields.
There have been several newsletters released along the project, and this fourth one is the last before the project ends. You can read about the latest developments of PARADIGM in the following link.
Budapest will soon be hosting the International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks from July 5th to 9th, 2015. VLC founders Pascual Muñoz and Jose Capmany will be visiting the conference and presenting the following contribution:
12:50 (Invited) “Microwave photonics beat filter monolithically integrated on an indium phosphide chip” by P. Muñoz, J. Capmany, J.S. Fandiño, J.D. Doménech, R. Baños, J.D. Martínez, S. Sirci, and V. Boria.
Very close in space and time, the 36th Progress In Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS), will be hosted in Prague, Czech Republic, from 6-9 July, 2015.
10:20 (Invited) “Advanced Building Blocks in Thick Silicon on Insulator Technology: Echelle Grating Multiplexers and Reflective Multimode Interference Couplers” by P. Muñoz, J. D. Domenech, J. S. Fandiño, R. Baños, and B. Gargallo.
If you are attending any of these events, be sure to listen to their talks and meet them in person to discuss any photonic integration opportunity.
