The annual Day of Photonics will take place Oct. 21st, offering the general public a look at the opportunities the industry offers. Organized by the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) and party sponsored by VLC Photonics, the event aims to raise awareness of different aspects of the industry and to educate the public – including public authorities, students, investors and other stakeholders – on its everyday impact.

Activities and demonstrations will be held in numerous countries to show the applications of the industry, which encompasses fields such as photovoltaic solar energy, lasers, LED lighting, displays and optical communication. The event will communicate the breadth, pervasiveness and importance of these fields and applications, and the continually emerging industry as a whole.

This year’s event is being held on the 31st anniversary of the adoption of the current speed of light value by the General Conference of Weights and Measures. It also will complement the International Year of Light 2015 initiative.

The 16th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks ICTON 2014 will focus on the applications of transparent and all-optical technologies in telecommunications, computing and novel applications. This year it will be hosted at the TUGraz, Austria, July 6-10, 2014, with the technical co-sponsorship by the IEEE Photonics Society.

VLC Photonics founder Pascual Muñoz will be presenting a talk entitled “Integrated microwave photonics: State of the art and future trends”. The paper reviews the current status of microwave photonics chips. The salient realizations from the different players in the field are summarized, both from the technology and application perspectives. An outlook towards the realization of advanced microwave photonics chip signal processors is given.

The laser optics exhibit 2014, held from 18-20 March 2014 in Berlin, is taking off with a new concept and brings two key technologies together: optical technologies and microsystems technology. The OSA Optics & Photonics Congress and the Congress of Optical Sensors and Cyber-Physical Systems take place in parallel to laser optics.

Finally, the JePPIX consortium, supported by the EU project PARADIGM and EPIC, will also organize a workshop on Thursday 20th entitled: “Generic foundry model for InP Photonic ICs.” This workshop introduces a generic development chain for photonic circuits based on Indium Phosphide (InP). Additionally, VLC Photonics sponsors a special OFC workshop that will focus on providing practical information regarding the design considerations, material choices, and manufacturing processes needed to create Photonic Integrated Circuits. Special attention is given to Multi Project Wafers (MPW) in combination with Process Design Kits (PDK), since these have proven to significantly lower the cost and barrier to entry for PICs.

The European Photonics Industry Consortium, EPIC, will be celebrating its 10th annivaersary the 13th of December in Brussels, Belgium.

The event will discuss recent developments in Photonics and a realistic forward looking perspective of what to expect, technology and business wise, from the photonics industry in the years to come. European funding and research opportunities will also be discussed towards H2020. On invitation only, there will be 150 executives, 50 representatives from public authorities, international media, and heads of photonics industry associations from around the world.

VLC Photonics and two dutch companies, LioniX and PhoeniX Software, have recently signed a common strategic collaboration agreement to promote photonic integration in TriPleX technology.

NanoSpain, the Spanish Nanotechnology Network, promotes the exchange of knowledge between Spanish groups working in different fields related to Nanotechnology and Nanoscience, increasing collaboration among universities, research institutions and industry. It provides a frame to researchers where to show the outcome of research through a web site and multidisciplinary meetings.
