The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) is organizing the workshop: “Meet or eat? Collaboration and/or Competition in Photonic Integrated Circuits?” It will be held the 5-6th December 2013 in Zurich, hosted by IBM Switzerland, and with the sponsorship of SWISSPHOTONICS and the support of OIDA and PHOTONSCANADA.

Several topics will be discussed in the different sessions, as the individual strengths, challenges and opportunities of InP, Si photonics and TriPleX integration platforms, the approaches for their combination in hybrid versus heterogeneous integration, and the technical and cost challenges on the assembly and packaging of densely integrated photonic devices with electronics.

Iñigo Artundo, CEO of VLC Photonics, has been awarded with the prestigious Torres Quevedo grant by the Research, Development and Innovation office from the spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. This grant helps to support the spanish technological spin-offs and SMEs like VLC Photonics to develop their R&D and business opportunities in these times of economic challenges.

Microwave Photonics (MWP) is an inter-disciplinary field of study that concerns the interactions between microwave and optical waves for the generation, processing, control and distribution of microwave, millimeter-wave and THz-frequency signals. Microwave photonics serves as an enabling technology in a wide variety of applications such as signal generation and distribution, high-speed wireless communication networks, radar systems, sensors, and modern instrumentation.

The 2013 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP 2013) provides a forum for the presentation of new advances in this multi-disciplinary research area, ranging from novel devices to system field trials. VLC Photonics’ CEO, Iñigo Artundo, visited the spanish Optical Designer’s meeting 2013, held last Thursday Oct. 3rd at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), in Barcelona. The meeting, sponsored by SPIE Europe, SECPhO, ASE Optics Europe, Kidger Optics, CD6 and Synoptics, gathered optical designers from multiple fields like imaging, lightning, photovoltaics, etc.

VLC Photonics was introducing a poster on the evolution of optical design techniques and tools towards photonic integrated components and circuits.

The ECOC Exhibition, the largest European optical communications event, is a key meeting place for those within the fibre optic communication technology industry. This year the event comes to London, taking place at the ICC London ExCeL from 23-25 September and will once again provide an unrivalled opportunity for manufacturers, suppliers and service providers of optical communications products and services to come together to meet and network with top decision makers from across the industry.

After two years of successful operation since its establishment, VLC Photonics is entering into a new phase of growth and expansion. New and promising challenges are ahead in the fast emerging field of photonic integration, and VLC photonics is headed towards new heights in the design and development of optical integrated circuits and their applications.

As such, management of the company is a very important endeavor, which requires a solid team to walk VLC Photonics in the path of success. Iñigo Artundo, through his experience this last years as former CMO, will now be assuming the role of CEO. His expertise on business management and administration will lead the new growth strategy and will drive the company towards a market-oriented operation. Pascual Muñoz, former CEO, will now focus his efforts on the R&D division and will keep on supporting the company through the presidency of the management board.

Additionally, Jan Hendrik den Besten will be handling the CTO role to David Domenech, former CIO of VLC Photonics, who will take care of the management of all design and characterization efforts.

Great opportunities lay ahead in the field of integrated optics, large markets and novel applications are now opening to this technology, and VLC Photonics has positioned itself in the best way to be a leader in the design and fabless manufacturing ecosystem of photonic integrated circuits.

VLC Photonics has published an article titled: “Basic silicon photonic building blocks for commercial applications” at the german Optik&Photonik Magazine (Vol. 8(2), pp. 52-55, Ed. Wiley, 2013).

In this article, a short review is given on the current trends of fabless silicon photonics, and some of the most relevant components being currently offered for commercial applications: Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWGs), Mach-Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs), Multi-Mode Interference couplers (MMIs), and Ring Resonators (RRs).

VLC Photonics is proud to announce that one of its founders, Prof. Jose Capmany, has been recently awarded with the IEEE Distinguished lecturer in Photonics 2013. The topic of his lecture will be “Integrated Microwave Photonics”, and he will be travelling during the whole year giving several talks and representing VLC Photonics in the field. VLC Photonics has been awarded a two-year CDTI Neotec project to develop software for the design of Photonic Integrated Circuits. This successful proposal aims at the development of tools and modules for an improved design framework and streamlined workflow, and generic building blocks that allow for the implementation of diverse optical functionalities.
