Photonic Test Automation Engineer

📍 Valencia, Spain

  • Starting date: As soon as possible
  • Full-time | Permanent contract

At VLC Photonics, we are looking for a hands-on Test Automation Engineer to develop and run automated testing processes for photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

Your project:

Join us and take ownership of the automated test processes that ensure the performance and quality of our PICs. From planning and executing wafer and chip-level testing to supporting technical sales and customer interactions, your role will be key in delivering reliable and cutting-edge solutions to our clients worldwide.

You will:

  • Prepare and execute automated tests of photonic wafers and chips.
  • Analyze test results and contribute to technical reporting.
  • Improve and optimize existing test methodologies and procedures.
  • Support the sales team with technical input for quotations and meetings.
  • Coordinate with internal technical departments and external partners.
  • Participate in customer calls and R&D project proposals.
  • Ensure test data is accurate, reproducible and actionable.

What we are looking for:

  • A technically skilled and proactive engineer.
  • Experience in photonics cleanroom environments and hands-on testing of PICs.
  • Familiarity with lab instrumentation and automation tools.
  • Proficient in data analysis using Python, Matlab or similar.
  • Able to work both independently and in coordination with others.
  • Ability to manage priorities and detail oriented.
  • Master’s, PhD or background in Photonics, Telecommunications or related fields.
  • Fluent in English (B2 minimum).

Ideal, but not essential:

  • Experience with ficonTEC automated machinery for wafer-level testing or assembly.
  • Knowledge of PIC design tools (e.g. Lumerical, Luceda).
  • Familiarity with project or customer management.

PhD Position – Photonic Convolutional Accelerators

📍 Valencia, Spain.

🌐 Marie Curie MSCA – POSTDIGITAL Plus Project.

We are looking for a motivated and curious researcher to join our team as a PhD fellow under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) POST-DIGITAL Plus, funded by the Horizon Europe program.

Your Project: Photonic Convolutional Accelerators: Harnessing Temporal and Wavelength-Division Processing in PICs.

Explore how photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can be used to accelerate convolutional operations. Your PhD will involve design, simulation and experimental demonstration of PIC-based convolutional architecture optimized for temporal and wavelength-division multiplexing.

You will:

  • Work on the design and characterization of state-of-the-art photonic accelerators.
  • Learn from academic secondments at CSIC (Spain) and UGent (Belgium).
  • Enroll in a PhD program at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB).

 

What we are looking for:

  • Master’s in physics or engineering (with photonics, optics, or AI focus).
  • Programming skills in Python, Matlab, or similar.
  • Interest in experimental optics, PICs, and neuromorphic computing.
  • Not have lived in Spain more than 12 months in the last 3 years (MSCA mobility rule).
  • No prior PhD degree and under 4 years of research experience.

 

Ideal, but not essential:

  • Hands-on work in optical labs, characterization of PICs.
  • Familiarity with tools like Lumerical, Luceda, VPI, or Synopsys.
  • Experience in LaTeX, scientific writing, Linux-based systems, or ML integration.


Starting date: Between June and September 2025
