PIC Testing Course

Photonic device characterization is necessary to classify thouse Known-Good-Dies (KGD) passing the yield-criteria after fabrication; which can make a substantial difference in product scaling plans. Besides, the production cycle time usually initiates with a proof-of-concept design to verify and iterate in some functionalities with subsequent refined iterations. Comprehensive testing is required for consistent decisions and root-cause-analysis methods to debug results.

This 3-day training course provides industry, especially those involved in photonic product development, with the fundamental technical skills in bare-die characterization flows: from practical insights into testing processes, chip handling, active optical alignment, and instrumentation operation. It also provides an overview of testing approaches and equipment and reliability factors which are critical parts of the total manufacturing ecosystem.

VLC Photonics

This unique industry ‘hands-on’ training programme provides attendees with access to state-of-the-art facilities, materials and equipment, with dedicated tutorials and mentoring for technical experts.

Target audience

It is desirable but not essential that course attendees have a basic understanding of photonics. The course is ideally suited to those planning to develop new photonic products, establish in-house or outsource packaging development and manufacturing. The course targets to audience of professional technicians, industrial companies, academic staff, and those who are in charge of areas related to integrated photonic, willing to gain experience or reinforce new technical skills on testing optical integrated circuits. Prior to starting with the experimental measurements, a series of technical presentations will be explained covering an extensive list of topics to prepare the ground for the laboratory activities. We want to make it industrial, and allocate spots for companies.

Expected outcomes

This course is an opportunity to learn specialized skills during the hands-on session, and to learn from experts at VLC in optical testing. Get practical experience from the basics of propagation loss measurements and data processing to more advanced topics such as active measurements and spectral measurements of reconfigurable devices employing current sources.

  • Perform key photonic chracterization processes and use industrial setups and equipment.
  • Perform bare-die photonic test, fundamental data extraction and analysis.
  • Learn about critical photonic testing design rules and test plannings.
  • Learn how to manage the photonic product design process and manufacturing ecosystem
