VLC Photonics is part of the PIC-UPV CHAIR

With the increasing interest in integrated photonics, Valencia is positioning itself as an epicenter of this emerging field. Aware of the need to train experts in this area, and due to the increasing demand for such professionals, the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has taken a significant step by creating and promoting a remunerated master’s degree in integrated photonics, with an unprecedented budget thanks to the PIC-UPV Chair. The PIC-UPV Chair project, aims to foster education, training, and research activities on integrated photonics technologies, Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), and their applications.

The goal is to bridge university education to industry needs. Of course, VLC Photonics is part of the PIC-UPV CHAIR project that promotes knowledge transfer and education around integrated photonics, a discipline that combines optics and electronics to develop compact and efficient devices, which have shown revolutionary potential in fields such as telecommunications, medicine, transportation, and computing.

The master’s program will cover fundamental aspects of integrated photonics, ranging from theoretical concepts to practical applications in research and development projects. Additionally, the remuneration offered to participants reflects the university’s commitment to academic excellence and talent attraction.

How is VLC Photonics contributing to the PIC-UPV CHAIR?

Under the PIC-UPV Chair program, VLC Photonics will provide an updated perspective on instrumentation, characterization techniques, and automation processes related to measurement and testing solutions, covering both chip-level and wafer-level, as well as encapsulated components.

VLC Photonics will also collaborate with the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) to offer a PHD research position focused on interconnecting photonic chips with optical fibers.

All of this will be possible as part of the PIC-UPV Chair program, which has been granted 4.2 million euros for the UPV and 3 million euros for the UC3M in the field of photonics, associated with the Semiconductors Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE). Not only VLC Photonics, but four other companies have committed to collaborate closely with the university through the PIC-UPV Chair project to train 40 individuals in the field of integrated photonics for the future. This initiative aims to create a talent hub and bridge the gap between academia and industry in the integrated photonics sector.
